Podcast 3: Battle of the Sexes: Gender Roles

29th September 2019 By Inbox of Purpose Leave a Comment

This week’s conversation is with Bee; my part-time co-host. Part-time because she could be fired at any time. Anyways, we hung out to discuss the Battle of the Sexes: Gender Roles.

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST

So, here’s the backstory.

I personally feel like there’s a war brewing. A war between men and women. There’s an elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss but it’s bubbling under the surface. Just like a volcano but at some point, it is going to erupt. Left up to me, no stone will be left unturned.

So, we caught up last week Sunday to discuss gender roles; independent women, motherhood, culture, tradition and religion and we even conducted a gender role workshop. So, here’s what we discussed:

Intro: Gender Roles

What is a gender role?

A role or behaviour learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms.

Here’s what I asked:

  1. Do you believe in Gender Roles? (01:46)
  2. Do you identify as a strong independent woman? (02:55)
  3. What role or purpose do men play in 2019 when it comes to relationships and family life? (11:05)
  4. When dating a guy what do you tell him about what you expect from him once you have gotten to that serious stage? (16:35)
  5. What does your religion teach you about gender roles? (22:55)
  6. Do you believe men will be able to get pregnant? (29:56)
  7. Let’s do a little gender role workshop. I want everyone to bring out a pen & paper and write these questions down. Discuss which partner you expect to do these gender roles listed below (to be expressed as a %): (35:30)

– The school run
– Cooking
– Cleaning the house
– Cleaning the toilets
– Changing bed sheets
– Paying the bills
– Paying on the first date
– Buying Groceries
– Ironing
– Gardening
– Changing light bulbs
– Giving birth
– Breastfeeding or bottle feeding

8. Final question, do you believe women can have it all? (45:11)

Closing statement – The aim of this gender roles exercise is to highlight our expectations and to have a discussion around it. Although, our expectations might be unrealistic they still need to be discussed. Lastly, our expectations might change depending on the stage you are in your life. Nevertheless, discuss with your partner regardless of how unrealistic it is.

I would like to thank Bee for joining me today!

Next podcast will be in two weeks‘ time. If you a man, a married woman, a baby mother, or baby father or a divorcee and you’d like to be part of this conversation and have your say then let me know by dropping a comment below.
